Description of the book — English:
Without seeking sympathy nor pity, the author tells the story of a deaf family and their overcoming of obstacles — things that hearing people often take for granted. This book aims to create a better understanding among hearing people for the unique lives and experiences of the deaf community — absolutely normal individuals who are like you and me in all respects, except that they cannot hear. Too often, deaf individuals are misunderstood, marginalized, and looked down upon. If hearing people had already studied Sign Language as a subject from a young age, the world might be very different today. This book encourages greater awareness and communication between hearing and deaf people. Through her life experiences, the author has become a passionate advocate for deaf rights and equality, declaring boldly: “Deaf Lives Matter.”
Description of the author — English:
Atta Humphries is a mother of two beautiful daughters, both deaf since birth — Stephanie, born in 1984, and Vanessa, born in 1991. She is married and blessed with two grandsons and two granddaughters. Two of her grandchildren were also born deaf, while the other two are hearing. Atta’s family life inspired her to become a strong voice for the deaf community. Over the years, she has worked tirelessly to educate hearing people about the challenges and needs of deaf individuals, promoting inclusion, respect, and equal opportunities. Her deep empathy and firsthand experience have made her a compassionate advocate and a beacon of understanding for the deaf community. Through her writing and speaking, she continues to raise awareness and bridge the gap between the hearing and the deaf.
